Anglerfish Pencil Drawing
Hello Friends!
Well, here it is! A finished anglerfish. Isn’t it scary? I probably could have darkened a lot of places a little more, but I don’t want to wreck my arm! And I definitely didn’t want to try and make the whole background as dark as the bottom of the ocean where these amazing creatures live either.
So it is Saturday. My husband and I were supposed to be going to the last Writers Forum meeting, but his weekend guy called in sick and he couldn’t find anyone else around to cover today. So George had to work. We were also going to go to a movie afterwards. But it is just as well. I overslept and yesterday stepped on something that I thought I got out of my heel last night, but it is pretty sore today. I guess I’m going to have to soak it now.
On the bright side it is another cool morning here in Northern California. A little cloudy and breezy so that is great! Tomorrow our daughter is leaving for a week of Leadership Training. She is going to be promoting to a Green Hat in the California Conservation Corps. I am getting used to her being gone a lot now since she will be going on spikes all summer, too.
We were a little disappointed that we didn’t get any letters from our son, Josh, this week, but George said the backcountry crew works from sunup to sundown and he is probably really busy and tired. I know he will write when he gets a chance.
I guess I am off to soak my feet now and start reading the book called “Rascal” by Sterling North. What amazes me is that I’ve seen a movie about this raccoon years ago, but I thought it was based on a novel! Silly me. It is a memoir! I feel silly…oh so silly…

Leafy Sea Dragon Watercolor FINISHED!!
Hello Friends!
Well, here he is! These are found mostly in the waters of southern Australia. So I was looking for an Australian male name since it is the male of the species that carries and gives birth to the babies. However, I couldn’t find one that I liked right now. But I have always liked the name Leif! So I think that is what I shall call him.
This was really one of the toughest paintings I’ve ever done. So much detail! But that is what keeps me focused. This project was relaxing, though, so that’s all that matters to me!
They come in a variety of other colors and the one I painted had a lot of brown spots.
And before you go, check out this short video of a real leafy sea dragon “swimming.” Even though they have unusual looking fins, they mostly just float around. Also, the second link is to a wonderful site where you can learn a lot more about this amazing creature!

Common Sea Dragon Ink Sketch
Hello Friends,
The other day I decided to do a quick sketch of the Common Sea Dragon. As you can see, it has many less appendages than the Leafy Sea Dragon. So why didn’t I pick this one to paint you might wonder? Well, to me, the Leafy Sea Dragon is more challenging and just seems to have so much more character! They are definitely wondrous sea creatures.
Well, our weather here has drastically changed in one day from beautiful cool and breezy spring to a stagnate 92 degrees! It is June now, though, so I am thankful that we had an actual spring season this year anyway. But I think our summer is finally here (even though it isn’t the 21st yet.)
When I was a kid living in Georgia, I loved summer even with the humidity (I didn’t know any different, then, though.) But that was because my mom either set sprinklers out for us to play in or took us to the local public swimming pool. Although, I do have great summer memories of our small pool we had for a couple of summers when the kids were young. All we could do was play in it, but it relieved a lot of stress!

Anglerfish Pencil Drawing

So besides the leafy sea dragon painting I am working on, I have also been working on this cool anglerfish. I checked out a book from the library that I’ve mentioned before called “Creatures of the Deep” by Erich Hoyt. The particular picture I am drawing from (not tracing) was taken by Norbert Wu and can be seen here:

I have always loved the uniqueness of these deep sea fish! I mean how awesome would it be to live in the darkest depths of the ocean but have a cool light attached to your head that never burns out? Pretty cool, I think. Although they look a little intimidating and scary, I still think they are amazing. But I guess it’s a good thing they aren’t swimming around the surface of the ocean where people swim.
I hope everyone is having a great weekend! I am almost done with my 8th writing assignment and am working on a couple of stories. So I have plenty to do along with my art.

Leafy Sea Dragon – Still Swimming Along!
Hello Friends,
I decided to spend a few more hours working on my leafy sea dragon today. You know, this is probably one of the most challenging creatures I have EVER painted! But it has been fun even when it feels a little frustrating at times. I am hoping to finish it this weekend but it will probably take a little longer than that.
In the meantime, I am still working on my writing. I also have some other doodling and smaller paintings I want to do.
It has been such a nice week of wonderful spring weather here! I hope everyone has had a great week wherever you are, too.

Leafy Sea Dragon Watercolor – Coming along!
Hello Friends,
Yesterday I worked on my leafy seadragon some more. I filled in more of the water that shows between its body and leafy appendages. I also started working on his eggs. I say “his” because in case you didn’t know, male leafy sea dragons carry the fertilized eggs from the female until they mature. Then the male gives birth to new baby seadragons. They are a relative of seahorses who do the same thing. Pretty cool, huh? (Too bad we women can’t do that with our young! Ha, ha.) 😉
When I finish this painting, I will tell you more about their biology…er…seadragon biology, that is.
Also….
here is a common seadragon ink drawing I doodled yesterday. I believe they are called “common” because they only have a few leafy appendages. I just love these little creatures.

Seals for Sunday
Hello Friends,
Well, today I wanted to watch “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” so I decided to use my watercolor pencils to sketch a couple of photos I took many years ago when our family visited Crescent City’s aquarium. This seal show was a lot of fun.
The first seal here had a couple of rings around its neck and went down the slide. The other seals below were with a guy who was doing their tricks with them. ( I didn’t paint in the guy.)Â He told the brown one that slid down the slide to get up on its front flippers, but the other lighter colored seal just lay there on the concrete by the pool. It was a huge one, too! Perhaps it was too heavy for tricks.
So hopefully, tomorrow I will get back to my leafy sea dragon. I hope everyone is still having a nice weekend!

Sea Bunny #2 on 2/22!
Hello Friends,
Here is another watercolor of a Sea Bunny! Â These really are fascinating and cute even if they are a type of sea slug! Â I enjoy painting them, but probably not near as much as sea turtles. Who knows? Â Maybe a sea bunny will end up in the same painting as a sea turtle! Â Now there’s an idea!

SEA BUNNY??!!
Hello Friends,
Yes, you read that right! Â I had never heard of a sea bunny before last week or so. Â Apparently, although it looks like a rabbit under water, it is actually a type of sea slug! Â Wow, right? Â I was fascinated so I had to paint one of course.
You can read about them here and see the photo from which I painted this one from  My background is slightly different, however.
This is a short article, and I think they are pretty awesome little creatures!

Olive Ridley Sea Turtle
Here is my newest sea turtle, the Olive Ridley. It looks similar to the Loggerhead, but the colors are strikingly different. It will be a pretty green color.
So this is my rough drawing for my next painting! I don’t know when I’ll start on it yet, but hopefully soon.
