Gothic Ballerinas-Mixed Media #2

It took me a couple of nights to figure out how to draw these ballerinas from one of the dances in Swan Lake. I watched the dance from a production of the ballet on Youtube. When I saw them posed in this way, I paused it and did a rough sketch of them. Then I worked out how to draw them the size I wanted for the 12″x12″ canvas.
After I finished the drawing, I turned it over and used charcoal to color over the outlines of the dancers. Then I put that side down on the white canvas and drew over the drawing with pencil so it would transfer the charcoal to the canvas. And once I outlined it darker on the canvas, I did the painting in acrylics mixed with gloss mefium so it would be somewhat transparent to let the washi tape show through. I had already prepared the canvas with it before.
I was going to paint it with the same colors as my first one, but I ended up painting over most of the teal blue background with purple, streaking it to look like curtains, but leaving the yellow for stage lighting. And after I painted the ballerinas white, I decided to leave the washi tape on the canvas unpainted for their dresses.
I wanted to use the quinacridone magenta again, too, which made a bright stage. Then below that I painted the purple mixture over the magenta and put gray spots down for the “heads” in the audience.
I really had a lot of fun with this one!!

Gothic Ballerinas in Mixed Media
Hello Friends!
A few days ago I covered this 12″x16″ canvas with a few different patterns of washi tape in vertical, horizontal, and diagonal directions.
After thinking about it for a couple of days, I decided I wanted to paint a couple of goth ballerinas since I haven’t created any in a long time. Also, I have never done any in mixed media.
First I penciled my ballerinas onto the canvas where I wanted them.
Second, I painted the left side with Golden’s Quinacridone Magenta acrylics. And I painted the right side with Golden’s Hansa Yellow Light acrylics.
I left the diagonal line of bird washi tape in the middle unpainted to divide the canvas and give it some character. Then I decided to combine these two paint colors which made an interesting burnt orange. So for fun I painted the bottom triangle area with this color.
Lastly, I decided to paint the head pieces and dresses with my Golden’s Teal acrylics. I really like the way the washi tape shows through the paints. And the best part is…I used my left hand to paint the big areas, but I did have to use my right hand to paint the details. So my arm and shoulder are not hurting now!

Gothic Ballerinas #2
This is the second painting I did on Thursday very quickly as you can probably tell! I love the way the yellow of the dresses turned out on the black canvas which is actually an old painting I didn’t like that I repainted black over so I could experiment with a black canvas. I couldn’t figure out how to get the images of the sketches onto the black canvas, though, so I had to eyeball them. That’s why the arms turned out funny on the third figure! Her right arm is quite long! 🙂 Also, I only did three of the sketches I had. The fourth figure is in the watercolor painting I already posted.
This was another learning experience for sure! My daughter loves this one, and after a while I have come to love it also.

Gothic Ballerinas #1
I did these spontaneously a few weeks ago. They were actually the first ballerinas I did. It is in acrylics. I do like the way the dresses lined up and the one in the shadows on the far left.
