Tulips in Watercolor

Hello Friends!

Yesterday I did some fun art exercises from an online class I am in. Then I decided to paint some tulips which is one of the types of flowers we are doing. It was a stormy afternoon while I was painting which was exhilarating! I was also listening to opera!

Have a wonderful day and give someone you love a big hug! 😀

Drawing to Please?

Hello Friends,

Well, here’s something a little different.  Some of you may remember this drawing I did in a college art class several years ago.  I posted this here back in 2013.

This is the most frustrating piece of art I have ever done.  Doing this project almost turned me off from drawing for good!  In fact back then my right arm had been healing from an accident I had about 15 years ago.  Working on this drawing made it all flare up again so I ended up dropping the class.  Looking back I am glad I didn’t finish the class; I think I would have done too much damage to my arm if I had.

The thing that bothered me the most was when the teacher just kept on saying that parts of this drawing needed to be darker or reworked or whatever. I’ve never been so frustrated with a piece of work I was doing!!  But I finished it. However, I couldn’t do much drawing for quite a while after finishing this.

Well, I’m glad I didn’t stop drawing; it’s just too much fun!  If you’re feeling discouraged working on something for someone else right now, hang in there.  You will be done with it eventually.  Try not to hate it too much when you’re done like I hated this piece for a long time afterward.  I still don’t like it much really, so it was a lesson hard learned.

Since that class I have learned to draw because I enjoy it, it’s fun, and I honestly don’t NEED others to like it; nor does it bother me if someone hates my work or criticizes it.  I don’t do art to please others; I do it because I WANT to. It’s my choice to share it.  And this is all to say, I am definitely NOT needing anyone to “like” THIS one!  Ha, ha.

Have a wonderful day, and give someone you love a big hug.  🙂

Roses for Julia

Hello Friends,

Here is the finished Rose painting I did for my blogging friend, Julia Denton.  Some of you may read her wonderful blog.  She always uses her wisdom to encourage her readers.  We have also become friends over the last year or so. Here is a link to her blog.  https://defeatdespair.com/2017/05/08/the-whole-world-2017/  Julia is a kind, hard-working woman who recently lost her husband of many years to cancer and is now caring for her disabled adult son by herself.

I cannot find the post that I am pretty sure I “borrowed” her photo of these roses from, but that is where I got this.

So Julia, here are some “virtual” flowers for now.  The real painting will be in the mail to you soon!  (My husband has to cut the matting, and I still need to find a frame.)

I hope you are doing well today, my friend.

Have a wonderful day, and give someone you love a big hug!  🙂

Patsy’s Creative Corner…Moved!

Hello Friends,

Here’s another short video to tell you what has been happening at my house!  I have been busy moving and getting rid of furniture and packing up my son’s room.  I do miss him, though…and yes, I am goofy in this one, too!

Also, since I am painting flowers again (and still working on sea turtles for sure!) I tagged this post with Georgia O’Keeffee.  I had forgotten how much I had written about her a few years ago!  So if you love her art, check out those posts, too.  Thanks.

Have a wonderful day, and give someone you love a big hug!  🙂

GIVEAWAY Watercolor Paintings

Hello Friends,

I know I already posted here today about World Watercolor Month starting.  So…I decided to go ahead and do a little sketch on a small 4″ x 6″ piece of watercolor paper I already had cut from my 300 lb. Fabriano watercolor paper.   There is just one thing…this is a 2 for 1!

The first painting I did is this one, the front view of a bloomed rose.  (I haven’t done flowers in a LONG time!) So if you don’t like the rose, you can turn it over to find…..“Suzy Sea Turtle” (that’s what I’m naming her.)   AND…

I AM GOING TO GIVE HER AWAY!!!   This is something I have never done on my blog or my Facebook art page, but I thought it might be fun.  Keep in mind, though, that the background color behind Suzy looks a little bluer in the picture than it actually is.  I mixed a little French Ultramarine with my Thalo Crimson for a light wash which makes a nice lavender, but I’m still getting used to my new phone’s camera getting the colors accurate.

———————————

So here’s what you do if you want to win Suzy and The Rose:

  1.  Leave a comment and/or like the post.  Then I will put your name in a hat and pick a winner.
  2. Watch for the winner to be announced on Wednesday, July 5th, 8 a.m., Pacific time.   Once you know you are the winner, you can e-mail me at larrytheleatherback17@gmail.com to give me your mailing address, and I will get Suzy and The Rose mailed off to you next week, okay?

Thanks a lot everyone!

Have a wonderful day, and give someone you love a big hug!  🙂

Wildflowers for Jill Kuhn

Hello Friends,

I posted this painting almost four years ago!  I had it in the frame already and took the picture, thus, the glare.  But I mentioned it to my friend, Jill Kuhn, who has a wonderful blog called Jill’s Art Journal, which you can find here:

https://artjillkuhn.wordpress.com/author/jillkuhn5384/

I told her about this painting, and decided to post it just for her today!  I hope you like it, Jill.  It is from four years ago, though, so I would do some things differently if I did it again, but it was a daisies painting I did for a friend who loves daisies.  I found several different kinds and put them all in the same painting!  Crazy!

Hummingbird Watercolor Sketch

Hummingbird Sketch

Hello friends!  This morning I decided to sketch my favorite bird (and my friend Jill Weatherholt‘s favorite bird) as a part of participating in the World Watercolor Group’s August 2016 Adventure hosted by Doodlewash.

If you go to his page, you will find that Charlie O’Shields is a very accomplished watercolor artist and a real nice guy!  I joined his group which has the same name on Facebook and wow, what an enormous load of talented artists post there!  I have seen some fantastic work, and hope to make many new friends.  It is refreshing to find so many other people who are passionate about watercolors.  It has always been my favorite medium which is why you see much more of it than pencil or acrylics here on my blog.

I am constantly thinking about what new techniques I can learn of which as you know will be Chinese brush painting soon.  (I can’t wait to get my new kit.)  I am so looking forward to doing something new!  It is the only way I grow as an artist I think.  I will still be painting with the Chinese brushes in watercolor, but I will probably try them first with the ink that they come with.  I was trying a technique I watched on Youtube last night with the one brush I have and wow it is not easy!  But where is the challenge if every new thing we try is easy all the time?  I feel more accomplished when I practice something and then eventually master it.  I think much more personal satisfaction comes when I have worked hard on something and then I finally get it!

Well, I got started a week late in this August 2016 Adventure, and I probably won’t get to do it every single day, but I do plan to have something ready for August 13th, because that is “Favorite Ocean Creature” day!  So I need to start on a new sea turtle, because we all know that is MY favorite sea creature!

Have a wonderful day, and give someone you love a big hug!  🙂

P. S. For all of you who are participating in this challenge, have fun!

Flower Friday

Here’s a photo I took in the spring of last year of the thistles that grow around our fish hatchery. I have not drawn or painted it yet, but plan to eventually. So that is all for today, no drawing or painting.

Also, I am thinking of my parents today. I believe it would have been their 63rd anniversary if they were still here. Rest in peace Mama and Daddy. I love you and miss you.

Have a wonderful day, and give someone you love a big hug! 🙂

Wacky Wednesday

A couple of weeks ago I began drawing circles using a stencil, but this is what became of them! It resembles an interesting jellyfish, I think!

Have a wonderful day, and give someone you love a big hug! 🙂
