Girl in Red Shoes-Stage 2
Hello Friends!
Yesterday I painted the next layers of the underpainting for “The Red Shoes.”
My phone camera makes some of it look bluer than it really is, but as I said in yesterday’s post, I don’t have the same blue that Kara Bullock used which was Prussian Blue. She mixed it with Raw Umber and Carbon Black. I used Ultramarine Blue, Raw Umber, and Carbon Black. For the different shades of darkness, she also added Titan Buff. And again, that is a color I don’t have, so I used Unbleached Titanium which is close. They are both shades of off-white.
This way of painting with acrylics still feels new to me. I used books to teach myself how to paint in acrylics years ago, but I honestly don’t remember learning to paint neutral colors as a layer under the other colors. It is actually pretty fun!
In my class for Let’sFaceIt2020, we are beginning the next module of portraits in which we will be learning how to do profiles! I think these are going to be the most challenging poses of the year for me so far!

Black Irises, Big and Small

Big Black Iris

Small Black Iris
Hello Friends!
I have been painting black Irises today! The big one is an 8×10; the small one is a 4×4. I painted these in acrylics on black canvases.
I may be starting on a new series today. I don’t have a lot of experience painting butterflies, but I would like to try painting them in acrylics and watercolor. Or I may do them in mixed media. I guess I will wait and see where my muse takes me!
Have a wonderful day and give someone you love a big hug! 😀
Owl Acrylic/Collage Finished!
Hello Friends!
I decided to finish my owl painting yesterday so I could just rest or do a few little doodles today. So here it is! The owl has a few other feathered friends hanging around her, too!
I also threw in a little green but no shamrocks. 😉
Have a wonderful day and give someone you love a big hug! 😀
Owl Mixed Media – Stage 2
Hello Friends!
So here is stage two of my latest project. My mixed media includes: acrylics, collage and a white Uni-ball pen.
I am done working on this for today. On to doing something smaller now.
Have a wonderful day and give someone you love a big hug! 😀
Owl Mixed Media Work-in-Progress
Hello Friends!
I took a break from doing any art all weekend to rest my arm which always helps. So yesterday I got out an old painting and decided to try to add some collage and make a whole different creation.
So I cut these little birds out of a magazine but am going to paint over them with different colors. There are also other magazine pieces under the paint. They are the “collage” added for texture but I’m not sure it shows up well. I haven’t done much collage. Also I haven’t decided what to do in the bottom right corner yet.
The original painting is an acrylic on canvas I did years ago of just a setting sun on the dark ocean. But now it is going to be a moon in a dark forest, thus the owl. I decided to do an outline of my owl with a white Uni-ball pen before painting it. The great thing about acrylics is being able to do things over on them!
I took another break today because it’s our daughter’s birthday so we are taking veggie pizzas to her house tonight.
I plan on getting back to this tomorrow and then on to other projects as well.
Have a wonderful day and give someone you love a big hug! 😁
Exploring Molding Paste
Hello Friends!
I recently bought some Golden brand Medium Texture Molding Paste to explore. Remember my mantra for the year is EXPLORE? It sure is fun. Anyway, I used a small flat canvas for this ocean scene. I love the way you can create some cool peaks, valleys, lines, and curves with this medium. I applied it to the canvas first with a palette knife; then I painted over most of it with a brush and acrylics. I also mixed it with a couple of the colors before applying it. The thing I like most about it is the plant on the left where I also pressed a porous sponge into the paint. I love this effect. It can be seen better when you make the picture larger.
This next one of mountains in snow is actually the first one I did.
I realized I painted everything bigger than I wanted, though. I did this one in my art journal. I didn’t plan the scene. Most of the time I avoid planning when I am playing with a new medium.
This is sort of what our mountains look like right now! We have more rain coming in this week which fills the mountains with snow when it’s cold enough.
I hope you all are having a great new year and exploring new territory in your lives as well. I love a good challenge myself.

Flamingo Fun!
Hello Friends!
I worked on this last weekend. I really had a lot of fun doing this in acrylics. I wanted a laughing flamingo because I just think they are funny-looking creatures!
I painted this on a thick piece of wood that was cut from a white bookshelf. I bought a bookshelf for ten bucks that only had one shelf. I knew I had other longer shelves in the garage that could be cut down to add another one to it. So my husband cut it for me, and I decided to paint the smaller piece. But then I ended up giving the bookshelf to him for his new podcasting and writing room. As it turned out, he didn’t need the extra shelf!
Next I am going to be working on painting some polar bears. I may do them in acrylics, but I haven’t decided yet. It is another winter animal we are doing at The Inspiration Place.

Acrylic Dry Brushing
Hello Friends,
I tried something new the other day, the same day I did my acrylic sea turtle journal cover, in fact, but these mushrooms were done by “dry-brushing” acrylic paint. I painted on a piece of Aqvarelle Arches 140 lb. hot pressed watercolor paper instead of canvas. I normally don’t like hot pressed paper for watercolors, because it is smooth. I like watercolor paper that has more “tooth” or texture to it. But I have had this block of paper for years and I mostly use it for experimenting or scratch paper. However, I liked painting acrylics onto it.
So this was part of my exploring I am going to be doing this year which is always fun even if I don’t care for the results. I didn’t really “plan” this painting or even draw in pencil first. I just did it spontaneously, but these are my favorite blues to work with. There’s got to be blue and pink mushrooms and white butterflies somewhere in the world, right? Most likely that would be where Alice went when she followed the white rabbit down the rabbit hole.
Have a wonderful day and give someone you love a big hug! 😀
Explore!
Hello Friends,
Since my mantra word for this year is EXPLORE, I decided to paint the cover of another journal. I may use this one for doodling or even writing since it is a small one with lined paper.
I also decided to paint it in acrylics after I laid masking tape around the whole cover and painted it with Gesso first. I like the way the lines from the tape created texture. Then I drew a small picture outline of the sea turtle onto the cover with a piece of carbon tracing paper. It shows up well and is easy to paint over with acrylics. Lastly, I added my own water and foliage. This was pretty fun!
Since this sea turtle is looking to his left, he is thinking, “Hey! What’s over there? I need to go explore!” So my spirit animal and I are going to have a year to EXPLORE!
Have a wonderful day and give someone you love a big hug! 😀
