Portrait in Pencil

Hello Friends!

I began working on this a couple of nights ago and finished it last night. I drew it from a photo.

I found out about an online portrait drawing class that is 50 weeks long and starts in January. It was offered at an insanely reasonable price so I signed up for it! Learning to draw and paint portraits is something I have been wanting to do for years. Hopefully, it will be challenging and fun! I have tried to learn from books, but have never been very successful. And lately, I have just been eyeballing photos. I know tracing them isn’t “cheating,” but I just don’t like doing it as much anymore.

I hope everyone is having a blessed holiday season. Ours has been pretty relaxing this year. And my shoulder is healing well.

Have a wonderful day and give someone you love a big hug! πŸ˜€

Portrait of a Filipino Girl on Christmas Morning!

Hello Friends!

I have had a picture of a Filipino girl printed out for years that I wanted to use to paint a portrait. So yesterday I got it out and began.

I liked the photo because she is wide-eyed and looks surprised (or maybe scared! Ha, ha!) The hardest part in portraiture painting, for me, is trying to get the skin tone right. In the photo, she looks pale, but I think in my painting I didn’t get her coloring quite dark enough. So I still have lots to learn about portraiture which is exciting. And to make it fit the season, I decided to make her shirt green and the background red. Then I threw on some gold sparkles for good measure.

I went to physical therapy yesterday, and I only have to wear my sling while I sleep now! My shoulder is healing nicely. I can’t believe it has been seven weeks already!

I hope everyone is having a nice holiday season. Mine has been stress-free this year which has been a blessing. I did all my shopping online!

Have a wonderful day and give someone you love a big hug! πŸ˜€

Portrait in Charcoal

Hello Friends!

For the last few days I worked on sketching this Filipino girl in charcoal. The photo I used is of a younger looking girl but I decided to make her a little older looking.

I had to make a few attempts but I like how she turned out. I have found that I like drawing girls and women, especially those from various Asian cultures, because of their gorgeous features.

Pastel on Paper

Hello Friends!

Here is another pastel I have been working on. This is my rendition of a pastel Degas did on tracing paper called “Woman seen from behind, drying her hair.”

I drew mine in soft and oil pastels on drawing paper, measured at 10.5″ x 11″.

It was a challenge trying to get the layers of colors the way I wanted them.

I am off to physical therapy today…my shoulder is getting better every day

Pastel of Another “Combing the Hair”

Hello Friends!

This is another rendition I did of one of the manyΒ  pastels Degas painted of women combing their hair. I like these works just as much as his ballerina paintings. I love how soft he could make them look but also put bold dark line work in certain places as well.

One of these days I am going to begin doing my own drawings from portraits of real people when I gain a little more confidence. I also know it is not “cheating” to trace just the main outlines of a face or body, because sometimes it is easier than eyeballing a photo to try to get the proportions correct.

In other news our daughter put up the Christmas tree for us today. So the living room is a little brighter now.

I went to physical therapy yesterday and was told I am progressing well. I am doing my exercises daily and still have my arm in the sling. I think it will be on for another week or two, but I can hardly wait for when I won’t need it anymore!

Degas in Pastels

Hello Friends!

Here is the other drawing I did with my soft and oil pastels. I really love the softness and ghostly feel this one has. His work is so fun to learn from! I especially love the colors of oranges and browns and practicing doing the white gowns. I really enjoyed drawing this one.

Pastel Rendition of a Degas

Hello Friends!

I played around with my soft and oil pastels last week. I did this one early last week which is called “Group of Dancers” by Edgar Degas. In some of his pastels, his images are almost ghostly looking. Some of them have blurred line work which I love.

I will be posting another I drew of a different pastel he did later this week. I am still drawing left-handed and will be for quite some time. I started physical therapy this week and will go twice a week for a couple of months, then increase to three times a week later on.

Chinese Toddler in Mixed Media

Hello Friends!

Here is my latest project! It is on a flat 8×10 canvas. First, I drew her on with pencil. Then I used a variety of washi tape patterns to make her coat. I used a “cardinal red” acrylic for that and her red bow. Than I used some dark pink for the other bow.

I used a variety of colors for her skin. In the picture I have her hand is a little shadowed which I found extra challenging as her face is much lighter.

The biggest challenges were her hair and the background. I couldn’t get my tiniest brushes to cooperate with my paints for her hair. Her hair is thin and wispy but I still may try to go over it at another time and get it less blocked looking.

Finally, I wanted to use a complimentary color to bring out the pinks and reds. So I chose my Golden’s Phthalo Green (Yellow Shade) to paint the background and added a bouquet of pre-made cut flowers by gluing it to the canvas with Liquitex Matte Medium. Lastly, I went over the whole painting with the matte medium so the flowers and washi tape would stay adhered and give it a little bit of a glossy look.

This was a lot of fun and quite a challenge to complete with my nondominant hand! The washi tape was especially difficult to cut and place. But I really like the way it turned out.

Have a wonderful day and give someone you love a big hug! πŸ˜€

Chinese Toddler Mixed Media-Part 2

Hello Friends,Β

I put the washi tape on the little girl’s clothes. So in my next post she will be finished!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE.

Chinese Toddler Sketch

Hello Friends!

Yesterday I decided to start a mixed media piece on an 8×10 canvas. Several years ago I found some cute pictures of adorable Chinese children online. So I decided to try drawing this toddler girl.

Next I am going to add some washi tape for her clothes and use acrylics for her skin and hair. I am not sure what I’m going to do for the background yet.

We have had a big weather change here. We got some rain, and in surrounding areas it is snowing!

Have a wonderful day and give someone you love a big hug! πŸ˜€
