Homemade Book Journal
Hello Friends!
Yesterday, I watched our instructor, Jerney, for Let’sfaceit2021, show us how to make an art journal out of an old book.
In order to create enough room for adding paint and ephemera to the pages, we had to go to each “signature”, where the string binding shows, and gently remove two to four pages on each side of the string.
I used a small book of van Gogh’s portraits that I have had for a long time and read lots of times. Plus, it is the only book I could find in the house that didn’t have a glued binding which would just fall apart.
So after we removed the pages, she showed us how to use a soft gel medium to glue two pages together to make them thicker. Then she taught us how to make a pocket on a page. We used a ruler to press down on the page placing it diagonally from the top of the book and then rippped away the right hand corner of that page and the one behind it. Then we glued the sides and bottoms together to form a pocket. It was actually pretty easy!
After that we mixed whatever color of paint we wanted with clear gesso to make it more transparent so the words can show through some. She painted a side view of a woman across both pages, but since the page on the right of my book had a picture of van Gogh in the middle, I decided to paint an abstract likeness of him on the left side.
What I love about this book is the cover which you will see in this video. Thanks for reading and watching!
Have a wonderful day! 😀

I was pleasantly surprised by this lesson! No one did anything like this last year. I have seen a few other teachers show how to make other types of journals, but not this particular way. 😁
