Art Journal Cover

Hello Friends!

Today I decided to make a cover for this little homemade journal. Miriam Schulman calls it a “No Sew” journal. She shows how to take a piece of watercolor paper and make a bunch of folds a certain way. Then you make three long cuts after you fold out the paper to its full size again. After that, you begin folding it on the lines the way she shoes you in the short video. I am really enjoying being in her “Inspired Insiders” Club!

To make her journal she used a 140 lb. sheet of watercolor paper but I used a 300 lb. piece since I love working on heavier paper.

She also suggests putting a thicker piece of paper on the front to make a cover. I wanted to put a cardboard cover on mine. So when I went to my cardboard pieces stash, I found this round one with the four indentions. It reminded me of a flower, so I glued it to the front of the journal and put a coat of “Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish” on it. I dried it with low heat, then began painting it with acrylics. I went over it with Liquitex Brilliant Purple a couple of times, speeding up drying time with a little hair dryer set on low.

Then I used Liquitex Cadmium Yellow Light Hue to paint the center. After drying that, I added a little detail to the center and Liquitex Hooker’s Green and Sap Green to create the leaves in the background. It is supposed to be a type of Clematis flower. So lastly, I added some Liquitex Deep Violet to the flower petals.

I will most likely be doing watercolor sketches in this because each page is only 5″x5.5″. It folds out like an accordion so I will be able to paint on both sides of each page.

You may be wondering why I made another art journal. My only answer is first, just for fun, and second, because it is small enough to stick in my purse or a little bag if I want to take it to town. I can draw in it and paint over it later, or draw in it with watercolor pencils, or markers, etc. And the paper is heavy enough to handle acrylics and even collage! So eventually I may be sharing some of what I do in it.

I am still working on the owl collage/painting, and other ideas are constantly going through my head!  Today it is at least 70 degrees and sunny out. I need to get some sunshine!

Have a wonderful day and give someone you love a big hug! 😀

About whitefeatherfloating

When I began this blog I was simply going to share my writing. However, after being part of the blogging world for quite some time now, I decided to begin sharing my artwork. Patsy's Creative Corner will always have my artwork and some writing, but I also created a blog called "My Crazy Life!" in order to simply write my short autobiography and hopefully get some feedback on it as I go. However, it is a very slow project right now. You can find it here: https://spreadingmy2wings.wordpress.com Thanks for visiting! :)
